Aten was the principal god in ancient Egypt during the reign of Akhenaten (also known as Amenhotep IV), who ruled from approximately 1353 to 1336 BCE. Before his ascension to the throne, Akhenaten was a devotee of Amun-Ra, the primary god of the Egyptian pantheon at that time. However, once he became pharaoh, Akhenaten abandoned the traditional polytheistic religion and embraced monotheism, proclaiming Aten as the one true god.

Aten is often depicted as a solar disc with rays extending downwards, symbolizing the sun's life-giving powers. The name Aten itself means "horizon" or "disc of the sun," reflecting its association with the sun's daily journey across the sky. In Egyptian hieroglyphs, Aten was written as an eight-rayed sun disk (Aten), which can be seen in many artifacts and inscriptions from that era.
