Tauno is a Finnish masculine given name of unknown origin and meaning. It is believed to have been coined by the Finnish poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg in his poem "Vänrikki Stool" (Corporal Stool), which was published in 1848 as part of his collection "The Tales of Ensign Stool". In the poem, Tauno is a character who is described as a brave and heroic soldier.
Despite its unknown origin and meaning, Tauno has become a popular name in Finland. It was the 15th most popular name for boys born in Finland in 2019, according to Statistics Finland.
In addition to being used in Finland, Tauno has also been adopted as a given name in other countries with Finnish-speaking populations, such as Sweden and Estonia.
